Decisiveness, decisiveness

Nasje

Cardboard, paper, tape, marker, paint

July 2013

Nasje made this painting toward the end of our first week. It evolved from a prompt to create a biographical story using words of personal importance. I love the painting that she made because it both declares and questions the fundamental act of making art: making decisions.  Making art is making decisions…. at every level! Form, material, concept, expression, subject, how to make it, and when to stop. What is often harder than deciding when to stop, is deciding when to start. How to start? Or even IF to start at all? Of course the answer to that is always yes: always start -- always start now, but that is an answer that is easier said than done, and more quickly arrived at intellectually than it is known within the self. The essential decision to start now is the beginning of all our projects in the Children’s Class.

All ideas – even prompts – must begin at the absolute-ground-zero-unknown. A decision is then what lays the foundation for an idea. It can be the decision to draw a line, or the decision to illustrate something known; it can be the decision to use wood blocks, or the decision to write a word, but some decision must be made to start the process. We focused intensely on this notion this week during the workshop, and many wonderful works were made in painting, sculpture, and text. The week was chaotic, fun, challenging, and productive. As we move into this second week, we will continue to focus on decision-making as we talk about representation and composition. We are off to a great start! We are making a lot of art!
