LOCATED AT FOREST HOUSES, THE BRONX - NEW YORK CITY, SUMMER 2013
This week we made a big jump from a few small paintings and sculptures to many larger
paintings and many complex sculptures. The class is attracting a consistent group
of children, amongst whom there are many younger children with a strong intuition
for abstraction, and older children who are starting to get the hang of making art
every day.
Week 2 was also the week of the great Glitter Terror: it’s hard to tell from the
pictures, but the glitter engulfed everyone and everything. No one and no thing was
spared. I think that the only material in the workshop could be glitter and no one
would think twice about making art with any other material. That sounds like a great
idea – or rather, ideal – but the truth is we had to go cold turkey by the end of
the week. With great glitter comes great responsibility!
This week we made a volcano, wood block constructions, dioramas, found art, abstract
and representative paintings, ink drawings and graffiti, all of which were shown
at our second art show, which took place during Forest Family Day on July 12.
