(continues from note 23) Undoubtedly, there is a correlation between the orderly
character of architecture and the predictability and lacking innovation of museums.
What especially interests me is to consider the potentiality for improvisation present
in the open-plan of the pavilion. Can we imagine of imaginative social structures
that could release museums from the paralysis inflicted by decades of bureaucracy,
routine and consensus? Can the informality of the pavilion, with its emphasis on
common areas, reception and hospitality, offer an alternative model to generate immediacy
and directness, and moreover relevance? The museum of the future ought to exert pressure
on institutional passivity and make the visitor physically and intellectually aware
of her or his agency in the construction of unexpected situations.
